2014 is going to be the year where I give myself the greatest challenge and learn a lot about myself
I will be running 3 marathons, 3 half marathons and a number of other events to raise money for Macmillan in memory of my dad, Harry Bonthrone, who died in July 2013. I wanted to do something to honour my dad but running a single marathon isn’t really a challenge for me anymore so I had to come up with something that would push me, get me right out of my comfort zone and hopefully inspire people to join me and achieve something special for themselves. Everyone knows someone who’s been affected by cancer and so by being part of my challenge will be about remembering their own loved ones as much as for my story.
Macmillan plays a vital role in supporting not only those affected by cancer but also their families and carers. By 2030, it is expected that 4 million people will be living with or beyond cancer and as such, Macmillan’s work will need to increase dramatically. With 98% of their income coming from voluntary donations and fundraising, I have decided to do my bit to help them as they helped my dad and my family throughout his short battle. I am also trying to raise the importance of going to see the doctor if you sense that something isn’t right and getting checked out. The sooner you receive a diagnosis, the quicker the doctors can treat and the more likely a treatment can be successful.
Just £25 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for an hour, helping patients and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support that prevents people feeling like they’re facing cancer alone. One in three of us will get cancer, we are all affected by it and we can all help. This is my way of helping
